Search "Rattle Up My Boys"

Simple searching of the table of contents and the full contents of the PDF for back issues of Rattle Up My Boys is available. Note the search results provide search results from:

  • Web pages: typically the table of contents for each issue
  • PDF files: the full contents of the PDF files
  • A summary of all the results

Note:

  • Up to 100 results will be shown (ignore the misleading numbers of pages at the top!) Some content may not be found due to OCR scanning errors

The service may be useful for a number of types of users.  For example members of the morris community who are looking for:

  • Information about a current sides such as “Goathland Plough Stots
  • Sides they used to dance with, including sides which have folded. In my case this would include “Black Cap” and (without using quotes) Phoenix Loughborough but a more general search for defunct might be useful
  • Articles about sies which were published in the 1990s such as “Pateley Longsword” and “Highside Longsword
  • Longsword teams dancing in the 1970-1990s – search for “teams dancing Longsword in 1979“.  Note in 1979 “68 teams danced Longsword. 10 teams performed Longsword exclusively. 18 teams performed Longsword regularly and 40 performed Longsword occasionally
  • Information about sword dance events e.g. DERT or Dancing England Rapper Tournament or Longsword Festival
  • Information about sword dance organisations e.g. Sword Dance Union or SDU
  • Information about sword dances such as “Kirkby Malzeard dance” or “Flamborough Longsword dance”
  • Articles about the history of teams such as “history of Handsworth
  • Articles about topics which may still be relevant such as recruitment or standards
  • Specific dance-related topic such as Notation or tying locks
  • Articles on how the sword dance community responded to the challenge of Covid

Other groups who may find this searchable archive of interest include:

  • Local historians and researchers e.g. search for research or  historians
  • Journalists and feature writers
  • Academic departments looking for projects for students

Limitations

The search service is still being developed.  We are aware of the following limitations:

  • Not all pages have been indexed – we are checking to see which pages are missing and will then submit the pages for indexing. Note it can take time for PDF files to be indexed.
  • Many of the PDFs for not have a title or description. This has been remedied and all PDFs now have a title of the form Rattle Up My Boys (RUMB), 1(1), Summer 1987 through to Rattle Up My Boys (RUMB), 28(4), Nov 2021.
  • The PDF files only have a partially meaningful URL – the first part is based on the date the file was uploaded (e.g. /2024/06/) but the file name uses the series and issue number.  This means the URL will change if files are edited – and the file may vanish from the search results.
  • There may be errors in the OCRing of the text. This may include misinterpreting individual characters (e.g. ‘1’ and ‘l’; ‘o” and ‘0’) and portions of text missing due to misalignment when scanning the original document. As an example see this image: Google will not know that it was a ‘contact lens’ which was on the floor!

In order to check how well the detection of text from early magazines is try a search for “Ampleforth revisited” – you should find an article  published in the first issue in 1987!
