Jenny Everett – Honorary Life Member (2024)

Nomination by Fee Lock on behalf of The Morris Federation Committee at our AGM in 2024:

Jenny Everett held the post of Events Officer for 4 years (1986-1989) and Treasurer for 17 years (2007-2023). 

Jenny Everett’s second spell on the Morris Federation committee as Treasurer from 2007-2023 marked for me a complete change in the way the Secretary’s job was done, and I benefited hugely from her hard work.  She introduced and managed the transition to online banking, which saved me from having to send people’s cheques on when they erroneously thought the Secretary dealt with the subscriptions (yes, cheques were à la mode then!); found the best deals on bank interest and switched accounts long before ‘switching’ was a thing; introduced the essential external review of our annual accounts; created and ran the Morris Federation ‘shop’: managing all the stock, taking orders by post, email & phone, wrapping the parcels, stuffing envelopes & posting everything off, and by no means the least sourced and stored pallet-loads of bells! 

She has always been willing to fund worthwhile projects, regarding the bank balance as being our members’ money to be used for the members rather than squirrelled away for a rainy day and gathering interest for its own sake.  Rarely have I worked with a Treasurer who has been so wholly proactive in that area. 

Having worked both in IT and as a teacher, she has always been very clear in expressing herself and explaining complicated things simply, skills which are astonishingly hard to come by, and a basic understanding of each other’s roles, without which no committee can function effectively.  And we have all benefited from her timely, pragmatic, and sensible advice on some of the more knotty issues we have had to face during her tenure.  Her like is rare and a treasure to find.
