This document provides details of hashtags used by Morris Federation sides to (a) identify the side; (b) aggregate related content and (c) promote the side across various social media services.  Your side may also wish to include its hashtag in publicity material such as a programme of dance events, in your side’s description in a folk festival programme or, as shown, on a card for handing out to people. 

A summary of how hashtags can be used is given. You can go directly to the survey if you want to see how hashtags are used by 170+ Morris Federation sides.

Hashtags Used By Morris Federation Sides

Purpose

A hashtag can be used to identify a side in a form which is particularly suited to use on online services. For example ‘Frome Valley Morris‘ may be used to refer to the morris side from Weymouth, but other will refer to them as ‘Frome Valley Morris‘, ‘Frome Valley Morris Dancers‘ or even just ‘FVM‘.  But agreeing on a single word – a hashtag – such as ‘#fromevalleymorris‘ – can clarify such ambiguities, and confusions with the geographical meaning of Frome Valley.

This identification can be used to help people (including possible recruits) to find information about your side – a Google search for the side’s hashtags listed below should quickly find the side’s profile on the Teamfinder service. 

If you include the hashtag in your side’s social media profile, it will also help people find these – and including the hashtag on all videos (or the best videos) as well as on your YouTube profile will help people find such videos.

And if you announce your side’s hashtag when you are performing (“If you liked our dancing and you took photos or videos feel free to include our sides hashtag if you post on social media“) this can be a way of quickly find media resources others have taken of your side.    

Finally since hashtags for side’s can provide a quick way of finding information about your side which you manage, they can be included in videos to provide a simple ‘call to action’ – “Impressive dancing – quick, Google them!” . 

Adding a Hashtag (and Similar Information) To Your Profile

In your Teamfinder profile simple add your hashtag to the box labelled ‘Side hashtag’.

Note you can also include a number of additional hashtags near the end of your profile.   The following are recommended:

• Kit:   Information about your side’s kit
• Location: Location of your side (town/city, county)
• Year Founded: Year your side was founded

You can also add your own preferred hashtags to the Other hashtags box.

Details of Hashtags Listed in Teamfinder Profiles

Hashtags which have been included in Teamfinder profiles are shown in following table. Note links are given to search results for the hashtag using the Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo search engines, on Facebook and on the YouTube, Instagram, and Flickr media sharing services (details for TikTok are slowly being added)

Note that the columns can be sorted by clicking on the column heading – this is particularly useful for grouping details by the sides’ main dance style (based on profile information, with ‘misc’ for sides which perform a wide range of traditions and ‘other’ for own style of dance – please get in touch if you side is incorrectly listed, but note only one dance style can be used).

The total number of sides with a hashtag listed in their Teamfinder profile is 170. Also note that over 50  sides listed also have content which is found on TikTok (we have added search TikTok links for those with results we have found – search for ‘tiktok’ in search box below).

In addition in April 2025 we began adding links to copies of AI searches using ChatGPT for a search for “Tell me about #xxxx” were xxx is the hashtag for the featured side (the initial set of searches is for sides which have contributed to Morris Federation short videos).

Note after a profile has been updated it may take Google a few weeks for Google to reindex the new information, so for some sides the hashtags aren’t currently known about.  

Conclusions

The side’s shown in the table have added a hashtag which can provide the advantages mentioned above.  We encourage other Morris Federation side’s to add a hashtag which will identify their side to their profile.
