Workshop – Fiddle Playing for Morris – Sarah Matthews (LIVE on Zoom)

Workshop – Fiddle Playing for Morris – Sarah Matthews

Sarah MatthewsSarah will go through a selection of well known and loved morris dance tunes of different styles and traditions, and talk through some of her thoughts and ideas on how to give life to these ancient pieces.  Ideas to be covered / discussed / developed:

– speed of the tune

– relationship of the music with the dancer(s)

– use of the bow in order to achieve lift, space, energy, drive

– use of ornamentation

– use of double stringing

The Lionel Bacon manuscript will be referenced.

There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

Feel free to bring your instrument and play along (while muted), or just watch.

Your host

Sarah Matthews is an experienced fiddle player and tutor, who has been playing for traditional dance of all kinds for around 25 years.

She has also been dancing in a variety of traditional styles for most of her life.  When we can meet and dance regularly, she dances Cotswold Morris with Pecsaetan Morris, Willington Morris and Harlequin Morris.
