Dancing on a swing bridge

Our attention has just be drawn to The Morris Federation’s day of dance and AGM in 2017 in Hull.

Eric Brady says: “A unique feature of the 2017 Morris Federation’s AGM was the opportunity for some teams to dance on Hull’s Scale Lane bridge as it opened to allow River traffic to pass. The only bridge in the UK where this could happen and a first in the long history of Morris.”

Unless you know otherwise!!

Here’s the Buttercross Belles from Otley taking advantage of the opportunity!

The Morris Census 2017 – results and analysis

snip of morris census 2017The Morris Census is a collection of information from all morris sides in the UK and around the world, which provides a description of the state of morris dancing in the 21st century. The Census is an online survey sent out to all teams of morris dancers in the world to find out how many morris dancers are out there, who they are and what they get up to. The first Morris Census was sent out in 2014 and nearly 600 teams responded to the survey, meaning it gives a very detailed picture of the morris community. The second Morris Census survey was sent out in 2017 and nearly 700 sides responded.

The Morris Census is overseen by Jack Worth.

For the results and analysis see: Morris Census

The Morris Census was supported by The Morris Federation, The Morris Ring and Open Morris.

JMO day of dance in Leicester 2017 – has your team applied to attend?

There may still be one or two places left for the 2017 JMO National Day of Dance. Morris Federation members should apply to the president: Melanie Barber.

Hosted by Leicester Morrismen on behalf of The Morris Ring this is your opportunity to visit and dance in Leicester on Saturday 13th May 2017.

Planned performance spots, places to eat and drink, useful contacts, and further details available at the JMO day of dance website.

Membership renewals 2017

Notice to all members! Your membership renewal letters will be sent with your Autumn Newsletter, and should arrive within the next two to three weeks.

Due to the delay, the committee have agreed to extend the cheaper renewal rate this year, and therefore the rates will remain at Group membership: £35, Individual/Overseas/Associate membership: £22, and Junior membership: £10 until 20th January 2017.

Additionally, we have hit a slight technical glitch with the broadcast system, so some teams have not received notification of the JMO National Day of Dance on Saturday 13 May 2017. We will therefore not be accepting teams on first come first served basis as usual, but will allow teams until 15th January to apply.

Crowdfunding for day of dance in Hull

The next Morris Federation AGM is in Hull on 23 September 2017, and the four local teams: Green Ginger Garland, Rackaback Morris, Makara Morris, and Beverley Garland, are jointly hosting a major day of dance.

The organising teams are looking to make it the biggest day of folk dance yet seen in the city, and would be grateful for pledges to their crowdfunding appeal.

They are looking to raise money for venues, organisation, catering, website, publicity, and would also like to commission filmmakers/photographers to record the event with the aim of preserving the heritage of folk dancing.

Please have a look at the page, share, and pledge if you possibly can: https://www.spacehive.com/hulldayofdance
