This document explains how to create a personalised name for your side’s YouTube account.
Your side has a YouTube channel. It contains lost of videos of your side dancing at festivals, local events and perhaps even more: practices, social events, etc.)
You’d like more people to watch the videos: perhaps members of the side who don’t make much use of online services or former members of the side – not forgetting perhaps the most important group – potential new members of your side.
You’ll probably find that your side’s YouTube channel doesn’t have a memorable name – it may be something such as https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOyWIyD6Ap_nQy3bSY79OMw.
But recently YouTube announced that account holders could create what is referred to as a YouTube handle which YouTube describe as “a new way for people to find you and connect with you“. YouTube go on to explain that “unlike channel names, handles are unique to each creator, making it easier for you to establish a distinct presence on YouTube“.
YouTube have summarised the benefits which can be gained by creating a YouTube handle:
You should receive an email which will be sent to the email address associated with your side’s YouTube account which will explain how you can create your YouTube handle. In brief:
It can be that easy! Note, however, that YouTube are slowly rolling out the ability to create handles, so it may be that it’s not yet possible for your sites YouTube account.
Once you have created a YouTube handle you should promote it! You can include the handle on your website or Facebook page, in publicity materials – and in videos you make!
We encourage Morris Federation sides to update their Teamfinder profile so that it includes your updated YouTube handle
When you visit a YouTube page for a side which has a tailored handle, the handle will be shown as illustrated below.
Notice that the Belles of London City are able to use the same name (with some minor variants) across a number of social media channels:
We welcome feedback on this document. In addition we would like to hear from morris, sword and other traditional dance sides who use IT and would be willing to share their experiences. Would you like to contribute a case study?
