A recording of the talk is available on YouTube: Clogs in Britain and Beyond – Michael L Jackson. \n \nTalk – Clogs in Britain & Beyond – Michael Jackson\nMichael Jackson will briefly cover the history of clog making in Britain.  He will consider European influences on British clogs\, and vice versa\, as well as comments of wooden footwear around the world. \nHeritage clogs and wooden shoes\, and clog-making tools\, will be used to illustrate the talk\, plus photographs and other old pictures. \nThere will be time for Q&A. \nYour host\nMichael Jackson grew up in Lancaster\, a town where clogs were available from several retail outlets into the 1980s\, and they were worn both for work and leisure. He bought his first pair in 1980 when he joined John O’Gaunt Morris Men.  Subsequently he has acquired many more pairs of clogs\, and clog-making tools and memorabilia\, sometimes as a result of generous donations. The collection includes not only many different examples of British clogs\, but also styles of wooden shoes from around the world. \nA couple of years ago\, a talk in a local museum about clog making led to a piece in a local newspaper (repeated on a number of websites in the North West)\, which in turn led to an appearance on BBC1’s Bargain Hunt. \nIn a normal year\, he can be seen dancing in clogs with Royal Preston Morris Dancers and Horwich Prize Medal Morris Men.  He can be seen dancing in other footwear with Abram Morris Dancers\, Medlock Rapper\, Regency Rejigged\, and Seven Stars Sword and Step Dancers. \nUntil normal times return\, Michael will continue to be busy with clog-related research.  He is preparing to re-publish an old history of clog-making in Britain\, supplemented by his own research into people and businesses involved in the trade at the end of the nineteenth century.  This will be distributed as a PDF free-of-charge in Facebook groups\, in order to reach as many people as possible. \nOther Resources\nMichael has posted links to hundreds of Google Photos albums of clog-related photographs on the Facebook page of Seven Stars Sword and Step Dancers. The albums include photographs (mainly by Michael’s wife Janet) of many different styles of clogs\, as well as old postcards and various documents. That and there are not many Jig teams about – at the time we found 2 active and 2 inactive in the UK and another also just starting out like us. \nAt the outset we decided to avoid the inevitable provenance arguments about how its supposed to go and to revisit the – usually handwritten – first collection notes. Our re-interpretation of these is the same starting point that all the revivalists had (apart from those meeting the old dancers) any subsequent variation from first recorded is to suit the dance to us. \nOver the years from humble beginnings we have performed at many festivals\, won medals\, and given a workshop series twice a year in Somerset covering most of the traditions that have Jig dances in their repertoire. There is a notation series and music for all of these available free from us. We now have regular members from the South Coast to Herefordshire and meet regularly to practice (subject to legal restrictions!)\, members of the team have taught and performed in Europe and Australia and during Lockdown we developed a video set and notation for Ilmington teaching used internationally.

DESCRIPTION:Workshops – Appalachian Clogging Basics (Levels 1 &  2)\nWorkshops at 2 levels on 2 consecutive weeks.  Appalachian clogging basics taught by Abby Ladin and Sam Bartlett from the USA.  Abby teaches the dancing\, and Sam provides accompaniment on 5-string banjo. \nThese workshops are being jointly hosted with the North American Morris Dance Organization (NAMDO). \nSaturday 13th February (week 1) / Saturday 20th February (week 2) \n14:00-15:00 Appalachian Clogging Basics Level 1 (not just for beginners!): We’ll explore the fundamental steps\, how to string them together and keep a rhythmic pulse. If you already clog\, Abby will challenge you with syncopation and beginning improvisation. No Appalachian experience is needed for these sessions. \n15:30-16:30 Appalachian Clogging Basics Level 2: We’ll build on the basics and add more steps to our repertoire\, work on musicality and tone\, improvise and trade rhythms.  Experience suggested for level 2: previous percussive/step dance experience in a traditional style (American clogging\, English step/clog\, French Canadian\, Cape Breton\, rhythm tap\, Irish step or Sean Nos). That and there are not many Jig teams about – at the time we found 2 active and 2 inactive in the UK and another also just starting out like us. \nAt the outset we decided to avoid the inevitable provenance arguments about how its supposed to go and to revisit the – usually handwritten – first collection notes. Our re-interpretation of these is the same starting point that all the revivalists had (apart from those meeting the old dancers) any subsequent variation from first recorded is to suit the dance to us. \nOver the years from humble beginnings we have performed at many festivals\, won medals\, and given a workshop series twice a year in Somerset covering most of the traditions that have Jig dances in their repertoire. There is a notation series and music for all of these available free from us. We now have regular members from the South Coast to Herefordshire and meet regularly to practice (subject to legal restrictions!)\, members of the team have taught and performed in Europe and Australia and during Lockdown we developed a video set and notation for Ilmington teaching used internationally.

That and there are not many Jig teams about – at the time we found 2 active and 2 inactive in the UK and another also just starting out like us. \nAt the outset we decided to avoid the inevitable provenance arguments about how its supposed to go and to revisit the – usually handwritten – first collection notes. Our re-interpretation of these is the same starting point that all the revivalists had (apart from those meeting the old dancers) any subsequent variation from first recorded is to suit the dance to us. \nOver the years from humble beginnings we have performed at many festivals\, won medals\, and given a workshop series twice a year in Somerset covering most of the traditions that have Jig dances in their repertoire. There is a notation series and music for all of these available free from us. We now have regular members from the South Coast to Herefordshire and meet regularly to practice (subject to legal restrictions!)\, members of the team have taught and performed in Europe and Australia and during Lockdown we developed a video set and notation for Ilmington teaching used internationally.

DESCRIPTION:The Joint Morris Organisations’ Day of Dance will take place on Saturday 30th March 2019 in Manchester\, hosted by Medlock Rapper on behalf of The Morris Federation. \n \nThe day will run alongside the launch weekend for Manchester Folk Festival\, and will incorporate both a Morris tour and Rapper crawl in and around the centre of Manchester. DESCRIPTION:New Esperance Morris are planning a ‘Festival of Morris’ in London over the weekend of 21-23 September 2018\, to coincide with The Morris Federation Day of Dance and AGM. \nCecil Sharp House in Camden Town will be the base for the whole weekend\, with indoor camping available. \nSaturday tours will use public transport within zones 1–3\, for which the daily price cap is currently £7.70. \nNew Esperance would like members’ help to decide on which of their many ideas they should pursue. DESCRIPTION:The Joint Morris Organisatons’ Day of Dance is a collaborative event organised in turn by one of the three morris organisations in the UK – The Morris Federation\, The Morris Ring\, and Open Morris. \nEach year the JMO National Day of Dance is held in a different location. The three organisations rotate the organisation of the event with a member side offering to plan and host the day. \nThe day of dance is a celebration of morris and traditional dancing. Groups from the three organisations\, and performing many different types of traditional dance\, will be present in one location for one day only. This is probably the biggest annual gathering of morris dancers in the world. \nCrosskey Clog (Open Morris) have offered to host the 2018 JMO National Day of Dance in Peterborough. \nFurther details to follow…\n \n

SUMMARY:Mastering Performance Workshop Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Mastering Performance Workshop Weekend – what’s it all about?\nThe purpose of the weekend is to offer ideas and advice to teams wanting to improve their standard of dancing and performance in order to meet their aims and objectives\, be that better recognition\, attracting new members\, festival invites etc. \nThe workshops will cover playing for evolved Cotswold\,  dancing and playing for traditional and evolved North West\, formal discussion panels\, informal roundtable discussions\, and a chance to network. \nTo book please complete the online form. \nAlthough one of the main objectives of The Morris Federation is to promote good quality Morris dancing\, which for us includes both dancers and musicians\, the aim of the workshops are to look not only at the quality of the actual dancing and music but also to discuss the whole performance\, so for instance: \n– best use of space available\n– how teams present themselves walking on and off from a performance\n– being ready\n– being aware of the audience and not blocking their view\n– interacting with other teams\n– showing support by watching the other teams rather than distracting the audience\n– team style e.g. arm movements\, lines etc\, which should become automatic so that members can concentrate on the figures without compromising the overall performance\n– having an awareness of the dance as a whole i.e. that it is a team and not an individual \nThe workshops are not at any specific set level\, so please be considerate of those less experienced. One of the main reasons teams remain good is that they go back to basics every now and then to maintain their style\, which then allows them to focus on the detail. \nRoundtable discussions will take place during refreshment breaks\, and cover subjects such as: \n– Warms Ups\n– Running Practices\n– Making a dance a performance\n– Team Kit\n– Team Strategy\n– Recruitment \nWe also hope to film workshops and have a note taker for the each of the roundtable discussions to add relevant material to The Morris Federation archive/library for future use by members. \nOn Saturday evening will be an informal social\, so bring instruments\, clogs\, voices etc. \nPrices are inclusive of refreshments\, lunch for day ticket holders\, and Saturday evening meal for weekend tickets holders.
