Poacher Morris are Lincoln’s finest and original mixed Border Morris Team. We enjoy performing lively and energetic dances and actively encourage new dancers and musicians to join us in fun social exercise. We love dressing up, making noise, clashing sticks, dancing at pubs and festivals and meeting and making new friends in the Morris and folk world.
Poacher Morris was formed in 1995 and we take our name from the song ‘The Lincolnshire Poacher’ and perform the dances of the Welsh Border tradition in our own style. We also develop new dances in the Border Morris style, and generally have 1 or 2 ‘works in progress’.
Although based in Lincoln, our members come from around Lincolnshire. Gainsborough, Newark, Horncastle are all within easy reach as are the many satellite villages of Lincoln, Hykeham, Saxilby, Welton, Dunholme, Wragby, Bracebridge, Market Rasen, etc.
As a Border side we carry on the tradition of disguise with our own distinctive colours. Black to represent the border morris tradition and yellow for the Lincolnshire “yellowbelly” (the name for a person born and bred within the county!).
Our costume is made up of colourful rag coats and decorated hats. Every hat is unique to the design of each Poacher member and this is an outlet of creativeness and individuality!?
